NGC7331 with SN2025rbs (19 July 2025)

About the Object

On July 14, 2025, supernova SN2025rbs was discovered in the central regions of NGC7331, the prominent galaxy of the well known Deer Lick group. The supernova is of Type Ia, ie does not show any hydrogen features.  

Observation Notes

After the weather gods were not very merciful on July 18 (I just got one 3min frame - but enough to clearly identify the SN), I was more lucky last night. NGC7331 still transits only after astronomical dawn, and the nights are still short, so I barely got 2h - not enough for a very detailed image of NGC7331, but good enough for getting a reasonable image of the galaxy + supernova. SN205rbs is located at about 7h below the center and of quite blue color.

For revision B, I used a starless image of the Deer Lick group rom last year and screened the stars of the revision A image - including SN2025rbs - onto it, thus getting the best of both worlds, a higher definition galaxy image and the supernova. Revision C is a animated gif blinking with and without SN2025rbs
