NGC2460 and friends – featuring a large, faint, tidally distorted disk
About the Object
The NGC2460 group of galaxies in the constellation of Camelopardalis is not frequently targeted on astrobin, indeed I could only find a handful of higher resolved images. But it is actually a quite interesting ensemble: The main galaxy NGC2460 is an Sab galaxy with an active galactic nucleus located at a distance of about 70 Mpc. To the lower right with a quite blue color is IC2209, a barred disk galaxy of type SBb with quite active star formation and gravitationally bound to NGC2460. The latter one also exhibits several very extended but quite faint spiral arms, in one of them is LEDA213434, the culprit for these considerable tidal distortions. Around IC2209 there appears also quite a bit of diffuse stuff, further tidal debris of this complex actively interacting system.
