NGC 4236 in Draco

About the Object

NGC4236, a.k.a. Caldwell 3, is a barred SBdm galaxy in the constellation of Draco at a distance of only 11.7 Mly, and thus a member of the M81 group of galaxies. Owing to its relative proximity it has a considerable angular extent, thus almost filling a full format sensor at 2.8m focal length.

Observation Notes

Like in my recent image of Arp269, the color of NGC4236 is fairly blue owing to recent star formation, as also visible in the  substantial Halpha emission. In order to work out the inner dust bands and to provide a bit more nuanced color composition, I used a  Sdm galaxy as white reference,  resulting in the yellowish-brown colors in the central bar.

Data were taken on 2025 April 12, 20, 23, and 25
