Cosmic contrasts – NGC2683 and the cluster-lensed galaxy SDSS J0851+3331 A1
About the Object
Cosmic contrasts - when objects of different nature and/or distance chance-align to appear in apparent proximity on an image. Here the almost edge-on disk galaxy NGC2683 - sometimes also called the UFO galaxy - on its own right a beautiful Sb galaxy with an active galactic nucleus. And almost edge-on is better than perfect edge-on as one gets a nice 3D-like impression on the rapidly orbiting gas clouds. A slightly larger area view (revision G) reveals the cosmic contrast partner in the lower left quadrant: the barely visible and highly distorted background galaxy SDSS J0851+3331 A1 - highly distorted owing to the gravitational lensing of the foreground cluster ZwCl 0848+3341 (revision F), which is clearly visible in the image.
